7 The Whigs Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip ATO Records | 2006 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Hailing from the down south state of Georgia, The Whigs are hoping the buzz they built from playing live shows during their student days at the University of Georgia translates into ticket sales for their first album – Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip. It’s a nice rip-roaring title that promises to the soundtrack to the bar fights of your lives but instead; this trio is more interested in following in the alt-country footsteps of Wilco and the like. And, when you kick out the kind of toe tapper that these guys do – that’s not a bad thing. Anchored by vocalist/guitarist Parker Gispert, the album opener “Nothing is Easy” mixes indie lo-fi into their sound and it’s a winning combo even if they do repeat the formula a little too often. “O.K. Alright” ventures more into pop rock territory (it’s a necessity these days to sound bouncy if the phrase “O.K.” is anywhere in the title) and even lands the kind of infectious opening groove that makes you not only stop and listen, but bop along as well. These guys definitely owe a debt to Jeff Tweedy and the boys, but give a listen to bass player Hank Sullivant’s grooving on “Don’t Talk Anymore” and tell me that he isn’t channeling some of the grungy sounds of Nirvana. The Whigs make the usual mistakes that you see on a first record – “Technology” is too busy even if they are trying to make a point and a few songs are too middle of the road, but they still get more right than they do wrong.
