I love Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Could it be Karen O's sexy, vulnerable, tough-girl vocals? Or the catchy, repetitive guitar and toe-tapping drums? Whatever it is, this dynamic three-piece has it.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs capture the kind of raw, artsy, self-conscious post-punk sound that has taken root in the new garage scene out of New York. Although Karen O's performance has led to frequent comparisons to Patti Smith and Joan Jett, YYY's sound is eclectic and current, with possible influences ranging from Kill Rock Stars bands like Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear to the avante-garde indie rock of Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead.
Tracks such as 'Bang' and 'Mystery Girl' are tightly constructed, post-punk songs combining the cleverness of Wire, sensuous rage of PJ Harvey, and the stripped-down drums of the White Stripes. 'Art Star' manipulates the listener by hooking us with the bubblegum pop intro of a Heavenly song before descending into a scream-y, demonic punk girl fury, and then shifting back again. Despite the fact that the self-titled debut contains only five songs, it is so addictive I found myself playing it over and over. If you‚re like me and can‚t get enough, stay tuned for YYY's next release, a three-song single entitled, 'Machine', available from Touch and Go November 5.
