This galaxy of an album by former Stars guitarist Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless may be new to the musical cosmos, but its creators have the kind of timeless souls that make for a gorgeous shimmering debut. There’s nothing super sonic about this album, in fact, it’s stripped down to it’s bare essentials but it’s still amazing at how much can be done with so little.
The achingly pretty “Swing Your Heartache” gets the album started off in just the right way, as we’re introduced to Ramsay’s easy vocals and how they mix perfectly with McCandless who soars her voice just above his. There’s an effortless nature to their music. While you might be tempted to sit back and just let Young Galaxy’s music flow over you, resist the urge. Their lyrics are worth paying attention to as well. “People are just traces like smoke on the lake” sing the twosome in their wispy fashion on the atmospheric folk pop tune “Lazy Religion”. There are more haunting moments on the melodic “The Sun’s Coming Up and My Plane’s Coming Down”.
Young Galaxy are at their best when they’re creating quiet folk tunes. They do stretch a bit on “Searchlight” which has more of a rock beat and lends them an R.E.M type of feeling. They make an okay transition to the more upbeat material even if McCandless’ voice does get lost in the mix on this one. The two return to their comfort zone to end the album with two sparkling gems - the warm guitar-centered tune “Embers” and the upbeat “The Alchemy Between Us” leaving no doubt that this is one golden partnership.
