We <3 this track - Prairie Empire - Snow

Prairie Empire - Snow by Trailer Fire records

Prairie Empire is a bi-coastal (Portland, Brooklyn) collective fronted by Brittain Ashford, an autoharp-and mountain dulcimer-playing siren. Their "folk-ish" eponymous debut, recorded in a Portland living room, contains a rich and string-heavy sonic palette of Ashford's lovely plucking, along with cello, violin, viola, drums, trumpet, and no shortage of vocal harmonizing. Britain paints such honest and cinematic scenery with her voice and words. She has an amazing ability to step outside the comfort box into a very vulnerable area to share her deeply felt emotions in her music. A perfect example of this is showcased in beautiful song "Snow," where her and her band play at your heart strings.

Trailer Fire records out of Durham, North Carolina will release Prairie Empire's debut album in June.

Hallelujah The Hills new LP Tour Dates

Boston's Hallelujah The Hills will release their new album No One Knows What Happens May 22, 2012 from Discrete Pageantry Records. Frontman Ryan Walsh’s has a well-earned place in the circle of contemporary lyricists operating at the top of their game. Musically, with the addition of Son Volt’s Dave Bryson on drums, the band boils the songs down to their essence and builds them up again with a strange sort of melodic alchemy. Boston's Marissa Nadler and Faces On Film both have guest spots.

Check out the track below and be sure to catch them on tour.

Beastie Boys Adam Yauch RIP

Horrible news just in from Beastie Boys PR company Nasty Little Man:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam "MCA" Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Adrock" Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums--including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band's 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill--win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend.

In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces. In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985's Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds disbursed to the New York Women's Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans--each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources.

Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including "So Whatcha Want," "Intergalactic," "Body Movin" and "Ch-Check It Out." Under his own name, Yauch directed last year's Fight For Your Right Revisited, an extended video for "Make Some Noise" from Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future.

Yauch's passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin' For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy, Oren Moverman's The Messenger, Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop, Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze's Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak, and many more.

Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

Paul Weller NYC appearances

35 years ago, on October 16th 1977 The Jam first performed in New York City at the seminal underground music club CBGB’s. It was Paul Weller’s first ever performance in the Big Apple. On May 17th Weller and his band will return to this iconic location for a private VIP event at the John Varvatos Bowery store. Tickets are not for sale for this show. Fans should visit the John Varvatos Facebook page for information on how to win tickets to this very special event.

Weller and his band will also make their debut performance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on May 17th, followed by a two-night stand at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, New York on May 18th & 19th. Tickets for those shows are on sale now.

Paul Weller’s two New York shows will be in support of his new album Sonik Kicks, which was released on March 27th 2012 on Yep Roc Records. The album debuted at #1 in the UK and was Weller’s biggest selling first week in the US ever.

Sonik Kicks features fourteen brand new tracks: “Green,” “The Attic,” “Kling I Klang,” “Sleep of the Serene,” “By the Waters,” “That Dangerous Age,” “Study in Blue,” “Dragonfly,” “When Your Garden’s Overgrown,” “Around The Lake,” “Twilight,” “Drifters,” “Paperchase,” and “Be Happy Children.” Both Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon appear as special guests on the album.

With Sonik Kicks Paul Weller once again shakes up his palate and stirs his influences anew. He mixes pop art punch with soulful communication; jazzy explorations into psychedelia and dub with razor-sharp melodies and abstract soundscapes with clear-eyed forest-folk.

S Carey Hoyas EP

      S. Carey "Two Angles" by Jagjaguwar

Hoyas, the follow-up EP to S. Carey's debut, All We Grow will be available in stores on May 8th, but can be pre-ordered at iTunes. Hoyas by S. Carey is a hospitable statement about love, longing and the celebration of knowing it well. You will find the familiar S. Carey modern classical repetition pushed into the vernacular of electronic music and beat-making. This is the warmest electronic music you'll ever meet. The beats swing, stutter and pulse while each instrument retains a heightened awareness of its form and function within the larger family of voices.

Hoyas started as a collaboration with a friend, Ben Lester, best known for his drumming and pedal steel work with A.A. Bondy. Carey and Lester began bouncing ideas back and forth a little over two years ago. They gradually came to four songs that had a life together. Recorded mostly in his attic studio with Lester, using a single laptop and not much else, Hoyas' songs exemplify home recording’s possibilities. Some sounds were composed by handcrafted instruments and others by junk. At times, Carey tracked vocals using nothing more than his laptop's internal microphone, and most of the beats and synthesized sounds were sequenced and arranged using stock-software. The EP was then mixed and produced by the Grammy-award-winning team of Justin Vernon and Brian Joseph of Bon Iver, and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Studios in Boston.

Lower Dens Propagation Video

Propagation is the second video to be made available from Lower Dens' album Nootropics (pronounced No-eh-tro-pics) out today on Ribbon Music.

Where lead track 'Brains' with its sleek, metronomic pulse examined our relationship to technology, in particular artificial intelligence, the sprawling 'Propagation' reveals yet another side to the band, one whose heavily metaphorical songs teeming with sound and portent unravel their full depth and range over multiple listens.

Watch the Butoh-inspired creepy video for "Propagation" directed by Sebastian Mlynarksi.

Belle & Sebastians Stevie Jackson solo LP

Belle & Sebastian guitarist Stevie Jackson releases his debut solo album (I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson on CD on July 3 via Belle & Sebastian’s Banchory Recordings label.

Jackson has been working on the record for a number of years around his touring and recording commitments, not only with B&S, but notably The Vaselines, Russian Red, Bill Wells Trio and God Help The Girl.

(I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson features twelve songs, which have been written and recorded with a range of collaborators in Glasgow and Vancouver in the period since Belle & Sebastian’s 2006 album The Life Pursuit. In addition to featuring various members of Belle & Sebastian, the tracks recorded in Glasgow include contributions from long-term associates and collaborators of Stevie’s including Roy Moller and Gary Thom (The Company), Bill Wells, Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells) and Katrina Mitchell (The Pastels), while the Vancouver recordings feature the New Pornographers’ rhythm section, Kurt Dahle and John Collins.

At the end of 2011, Stevie took a compact quartet on the road to showcase the songs comprising (I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson, this line-up consisting of Bob Kildea (Belle & Sebastian), Stu Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen). The tour culminated in a sold-out homecoming at King Tut’s in Glasgow, which a five-star Herald review described as “a masterclass in the art of pop craftsmanship” and “one of the gigs of the year”.

Will Sergeant Art Exhibit

Will Sergeant, from the Liverpool post-punk band Echo & the Bunnymen, will be showing his artwork for the first time ever in the U.S. This exhibition comes directly from the Penny Lane Gallery in Liverpool. The show will run from May 18th through June 16th, 2012. This exhibit blurs the line between music and art. In addition to the current and previous exhibition, Will Sergeant has also participated in Mr. Brainwash’s L.A. Art Show 2011. Will’s work has been receiving a lot of praise from this venture into another side of the art world and his pieces are in collections from Australia to the States to Brazil to all over the UK and beyond. More photos of Will’s work can be seen here www.willsergeant.com.
