AFI (a fire inside) busted down the barn doors tonight as they unleashed their furor on Hollywood at the Henry Fonda Theater during a KROQ promoted gig to coincide the release of Sing the Sorrow, AFI’s major label debut on Dreamworks Records today. The band lay dormant for almost two years while they prepared and recorded Sing the Sorrow with two legendary producers, Jerry Finn and Butch Vig, but tonight it was all about what makes AFI one of the premiere live bands on today’s touring circuit. With legions of goth-rock-punk-hardcore fans throughout tonight’s crowd, the band played a complete set of songs spanning the ten-plus year history of the group. All recent predictions point towards major rock stardom in the future, but to the throngs of kid’s tonight, it had already happened years ago.

Opening the set with the haunting “Miseria Cantare”, the band then blazed into “Lost” and then radio hit #1, “Girls not Grey”, stirring the crowd into a frenzy. Then, in an all out fervor, “Prayer Position” and “Triple Zero” started the pit rumbling in a clockwise circular motion. Although the sound was a little blown out, Adam Carson (drums), Hunter (bass) and Jade (guitar) conveyed a solidity as they tore on through the rest of the set and Davey Havok bellowed out the vocals, giving it everything he had and even went out walking like Moses into the sea of shoulders of fans in the audience during “God Called in Sick Today”.
What made this show special was the fact it was free to kid’s who had purchased the CD in advance and thus were entitled to a free ticket to this concert which was only comfortably crowded in the newly refurbished Henry Fonda Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. The red hued lighting and swank backdrop were the perfect compliment to AFI as they proved what all the hype was about. Look for them on the Warped Tour this summer and bigger venues while on tour in April 2003.
