AFI swooped in to So Cal last week for a series of shows and again solidified the reason they remain the only Children of The Fall. Sold out gigs scattered Los Angeles and San Diego and stalwart radio KROQ booked them for their annual Halloween Ball which unfortunately was cancelled last minute, leaving hundreds of revelers ticketed and constumed by without a show.
This show at Universal however did go on and went off seemingly flawless as the band tore into it riding off the jetty left behind by openers Blood Brothers and Death by Stereo. This was clearly AFI’s show once they hit the stage and the lights dimmed. I had my reservations about AFI holding its own in the massive amphitheater but was silenced as the set carried on into the classic Days of the Phoenix.
Blistering guitars compliments of Jade and precision bass by Hunter left drummer Adam Carson ample space to lay his riveting beats across the AFI sound-scape. Davey Havok also has perfected his singing ability over the last year of non-stop touring and was in great form compared to the last time I saw them earlier this year at the Henry Fonda Theater. Using the massive stage to their advantage, members ran back and forth across the stage, kicking over mike stands, standing on monitors and jumping off the drum riser. Brandon Schiapetti of Bleeding Through came out and helped Davey with the anthem Death of Seasons stirring the crowd into an all out frenzy. Some fans had there reservations about this show, the huge venue, being in Los Angeles and the heavy rotation KROQ has given them this year, but the crowd was on fire, consistent and showed a steady love through all songs old and newer tracks like Girls not Grey and Leaving Song. Be on the lookout for AFI to do a string of sold out dates next fall at Staples…
