I drove up to Providence this weekend to see what all the hype surrounding this relatively unknown band was all about—and The All-For-Nots definitely delivered. Shirley Burke, the raccoon-eyed drummer layed down beats that held Caleb Casablanca's bass pop-punk grooves together like glue. Paul Sllverzweig’s keyboard playing was a nice addition to the music as well, but guitarist/singer Johnny Hamilton's vocals didn't do much for me.
Things really started to take off for the band when the sexy tambourine player, Farrah, jumped on stage and started to sing. Her beautiful voice added the missing dynamic to the Brooklyn-based band, and she quickly brought their set to life with her charismatic stage presence.
The Brooklyn-based band are easily at their best when the spirited siren Farrah is in the limelight, and Johnny's focus is more on guitar and backing vocals. When they were on stage together, the two shared a brilliant chemistry and stage presence that electrified the normally reserved Providence art crowd, and will surely help rocket them to the heights of indie-rock glory.
I had a chance after the show to speak with Farrah and Caleb, and to offer them my feedback. Hopefully the band will heed my advice and we’ll all be blessed with more new songs featuring Farrah on lead vocals. Regardless, I can't wait to see 'em again at another show, hopefully here in Brooklyn. The band is currently set to play Philly, Boston, State College, and Woodstock, so if you get the chance to go to any of those shows, go.
