In support of his new album “The Private Press” DJ Shadow played to a sold out show at the historic Mayan Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Starting off the event by thanking the audience in his typical humble fashion, Shadow set a laidback tone for the night’s musical oddessy. After a twelve minute film about drummers by B+, Shadow fired up his gear and began the sonic journey. Like a mad scientist, Shadow layed down track after track of mind bending music, set to an egually gorgeouse visual masterpiece projected on three screens. As Shadow stated in his prologue, this was an experience of sight and sound, which at the same time looked back to the nostalgia of the past and forward to the future of live music. Shadow has added two Pioneer DJ-1000’s to his gear list, even taking a couple opportunities to use the scratch wheel to manipulate his CD’s just like vinyl. The DJ-1000’s sounded great. At the end of the set, Shadow was joined on stage by DJ Numark and Cut Chemist. The three performed, each on their own Akai MPC, an unbelievable beat battle. Furiously pounding out beats, perfectly in time, even using their chins to trigger the sampler’s pads.
