Fatboy Slim and The Dinosaurs

Despite painfully slow moving lines, colder than average winter weathers and that lame group that came in the hummer limo, the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, set in Exposition Park proved to be one of the most competent facilities I have been to recently to host the most competent Fatboy Slim on his first set in Los Angeles in over three years. In a first for the museum and a first for Fatboy, 1,500 strong sold out this amazing event which spanned the expanse of this architectural wonder which was open in it’s entireity to those who attended, leaving us dancing amongst the impalas, dinosaur bones polar bear families and the great Light, Motion and Design installation.
Thanks to the amazing staff of the museum, we were ushered in past the throngs of attendees and given a slight rundown of the event and the reasons behind this being the choice of venue. As it turns out, Norman (aka Fatboy) wanted to do a tour that took him from the traditional venues and so the NHM stepped up and offered its grounds to enable this to take place. To further the ambiance, projection screens were positioned throughout the museum with sound in tow, so despite where you might be, you were never far from the visual/aural elements.
Fatboy went on in the 11 o’clock hour and pressed hard for a staggering two hour set that melded his own productions with other white label gems. In another refreshing take to this eve, it was pleasing to know that after all the technological advances over the last few years that Fatboy still spins wax. No computers hooked up to the board, no ipods, no final scratch, just a pair of 1200’s and a bag of tracks.
This was a far better than expected show in an amazing setting. For those unable to attend for whatever reason, be on the look out in 2005 as the NHM beefs up its bookings of live and DJ talent which are sure to become staples in the halls like the dino bones in the foyer.
