I am a huge fan of Dave Grohl and all he stands for. I find him hilarious and adorable. It had been a while since I had seen the Foo Fighters, as I am not a big fan of the large venues. Although I love the Foo Fighters music I do find it annoying that everyone and their grandma like it too. This, of course, translating into the hell that is KROQ and I will not bash any further. Now on with the show. I arrived in time to catch Cave In. They have an awesome drummer so I figured Dave must have hand picked them. They kept my interest and had some rockin’ tunes. I figure KROQ is pushing them and they will have a “modern rock” hit by summer.
Next up were the Transplants. The LA crowd was way hyped for this conglomerate of “musicians”. While Rancid was never one of my top bands they are from my neck of the east bay so I have always felt a kin to them. Tim Armstrong (Rancid) was running from side to side with his enormous guitar looking like a caged animal. Tim would periodically jump into the pit, guitar and all. Even Lars Frederiksen (Rancid) showed up to sing a tune. Seeing one of my favorite drummers, Travis (Blink 182, Boxcar Racer), beating the skins reminded me of Angus Young from AC/DC with his relentless head banging and boyish looks. Travis was jumping around and stood behind his wall of drums for most of the show. On full throttle they covered the Clash’s ‘White Riot’. Then they rapped of the whoas of Oakland and living the street life. The crowd loved the energy they were throwing out. Although they apologized for technical difficulties they pulled the show off.
Next up were those Fighters of Foo. The amphitheater was packed full and everyone was on their feet. I was jumping around like a spaz and almost pissed my pants I was so darned excited. They opened with the new one ‘All My Life’ then went on with the tribute to Kurdt, ‘My Hero’. I knew that it was going to be a cock rawkin’ show but I wanted to hear some old Foo’s, one of my favorites is ‘For All the Cow’, and wouldn’t you know it after a few more new ones they busted it out. I was climbing over seats and singing my lungs out. I had lost my voice by the end of the show. But there is nothing like a sing-a-long to start your weekend out right. ‘Stacked Actors’ was 20 minutes long and they played a classic 70’s medley while Dave ran out to the middle of the theater and played high a-top the sound boards. I was so proud to have hometown boy Chris Shiflett on stage busting it out. His talent was oozing all over the stage. Finally, Chris is the cog in this well-oiled machine and completes the soon to be classic rock band. The highlight of the night was when Liam Lynch came out with his guitar and started his one hit wonder ‘My United States of Whatever’ only to be joined by Dave on drums and No Doubt’s Tony Kanal on bass. It was a colossal hit with the crowd and warmed us up for the final encore. Dave quipped to Liam “Now are you ready for a real multi-platinum hit?” and kerranged into ‘Learn to Fly’. In the final stages of the encore the Foo’s covered an old skool fav ‘Gas Chamber’ by the Angry Samoans. It left me with butterflies in my stomach and I never wanted it to end. Alas the show whined it’s way down with ‘Aurora’ and ‘Everlong’. It did leave me longing for more old tunes but I left on a high nonetheless.
