With an 800 acre brush fire scorching the hills around the Greek Theater Los Angeles, a scheduled Modest Mouse show was in question. That is until the show was moved across town to the much bigger, indoor Universal Amphitheater. As support acts Man Man and Love as Laughter teased the crowd as pleasant openers, it was the 10.15 onstage time of Isaac Brock and company that dominated the nights performance. Seeming rather jovial for once, Brock lamented on the move from the fire ravaged park commenting on the homeless man running around wild starting fires. It’s no surprise this was found amusing by him as he had a crew of homeless in Portland that camped outside the studio where We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank was made, this year’s excellent new release.
Even though founding member Eric Judy is MIA at the moment, the core quintet pummeled the crowd with an onslaught on new material with Johnny Marr tastefully adding his signature licks to Fly Trapped In A Jar and Florida where his backup harmonies were delicate offsetting Brocks bark. Older gems that hadn’t been played lately included the indie ipod staple Trailer Trash and Moon and Antarctica Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes.
Although the show consisted of mostly newer material from the last two releases, the looseness that makes Mouse so great had fully returned this evening as Brock extended the jam of Doing The Cockroach and the excellent new Spitting Venom, the show and crowd highlight. Of the six thousand in attendance, everyone was standing in approval during the whole show further validating the meteoric rise of Modest Mouse while not compromising one note for capitalism. If you stay true to your belief, the world will follow eventually.
